Periodontal Review
A periodontal review is a follow-up appointment used to assess how your gums have responded after periodontal treatment. It allows us to compare your current gum health with your previous assessment and determine whether the condition is becoming more stable.
Periodontal treatment is not judged by how the gums look immediately afterwards. The tissues need time to heal, so reviewing the results is an important part of understanding what has improved and whether any areas require further attention.
Why is a periodontal review important?
- To measure how your gums have responded to treatment
- To identify any periodontal pockets that remain deep or inflamed
- To check whether bleeding and plaque levels have reduced
- To monitor gum recession and tooth stability
- To review your brushing and interdental cleaning routine
- To decide whether further treatment or maintenance is required
What happens during the appointment?
Your gums will be carefully reassessed using a periodontal probe. Measurements may be taken around each tooth and compared with the records from your previous assessment.
We may also record bleeding, plaque levels, gum recession, tooth mobility and any remaining areas of calculus. This provides a detailed picture of how well your gums have healed and where further improvement may be needed.
What results are we looking for?
Healthy progress may include less bleeding, reduced inflammation, shallower periodontal pockets and improved plaque control. Your gums may also feel firmer and more comfortable during brushing and cleaning.
Some deeper pockets may remain even when the overall response has been positive. These areas may require closer monitoring, additional cleaning or further periodontal treatment.
What if my gums have not improved?
A limited response does not always mean the treatment has failed. Persistent inflammation can be affected by plaque control, smoking, certain health conditions, medication and the original severity of the gum disease.
Your results will be discussed openly so that any barriers can be identified. The next stage may involve improving your home-care routine, repeating treatment in selected areas or referring you for further periodontal care.
Will I need further treatment?
This depends on the findings from your review. If your gums have responded well, you may move into a personalised maintenance programme designed to keep the condition stable.
If active gum disease remains, further treatment may be recommended before maintenance begins. The aim is to focus treatment only where it is genuinely needed rather than repeating the entire process unnecessarily.
What is periodontal maintenance?
Periodontal maintenance is ongoing professional care provided after active treatment. Appointments usually include monitoring your gums, removing plaque and calculus from areas that are difficult to clean and reinforcing effective home care.
The timing of these appointments is based on your individual level of risk. Some patients require more frequent care, while others can safely attend at longer intervals once their gum health is stable.
How can I maintain the improvements?
- Brush thoroughly twice each day with a fluoride toothpaste
- Clean between every tooth using the recommended interdental brushes or floss
- Pay particular attention to areas that continue to bleed
- Avoid smoking, as it can affect healing and increase periodontal risk
- Attend the maintenance and review appointments recommended for you
- Contact the practice if you notice increasing bleeding, swelling or tooth movement
Protecting your gum health long term
A periodontal review is not simply a final check after treatment. It helps establish whether the disease is under control and creates a clear plan for protecting your gums, supporting bone and natural teeth over the long term.
