PerioChip and Chlorhexidine 36% Therapy
PerioChip is a small, biodegradable dental insert used as an additional treatment for selected periodontal pockets. It contains chlorhexidine, a non-antibiotic antimicrobial ingredient that helps reduce harmful bacteria beneath the gumline.
The chip is placed directly into an affected periodontal pocket following professional cleaning. This allows chlorhexidine to be released locally over several days, targeting the area without the need for antibiotic tablets.

What does “chlorhexidine 36%” mean?
PerioChip is made from a biodegradable gelatin matrix containing chlorhexidine digluconate. Chlorhexidine makes up approximately 36% of the chip’s formulation, while each individual insert contains 2.5 mg of the active ingredient.
This is much more concentrated than a chlorhexidine mouthwash because the chip is designed to work locally inside one periodontal pocket rather than rinse around the whole mouth.
How does PerioChip work?
Once placed beneath the gumline, the chip gradually releases chlorhexidine into the periodontal pocket. Chlorhexidine helps control bacteria and disrupt the plaque biofilm associated with periodontal inflammation.
The chip naturally breaks down over time, so it does not usually need to be removed. It is intended to support professional mechanical cleaning rather than replace it.
What happens during treatment?
The periodontal pocket will first be assessed and professionally cleaned where necessary. The PerioChip is then carefully inserted beneath the gumline using a suitable instrument.
The procedure is normally quick and usually does not require stitches. Local anaesthetic may not be necessary, although this depends on the sensitivity of the site and whether cleaning is also being carried out.
Will I be able to feel the chip?
You may notice slight pressure or awareness around the treated area shortly after placement, but most patients do not continue to feel the chip once it has settled into the pocket.
A mild taste, temporary tenderness or slight gum irritation may occur. Contact the practice if you experience significant swelling, worsening pain or any signs of an allergic reaction.
What should I do after treatment?
- Avoid disturbing the treated area with your tongue or fingers
- Follow the cleaning instructions given during your appointment
- Avoid flossing directly around the treated site until advised
- Continue brushing the rest of your mouth thoroughly
- Avoid very hard or sticky foods around the area immediately afterwards
- Attend the recommended periodontal review appointment
Aftercare may vary depending on the location of the chip and the treatment completed alongside it, so always follow the specific advice provided by your clinician.
When will the area be reviewed?
The treated pocket will normally be reassessed after a suitable healing period. Pocket depth, bleeding and inflammation may be measured and compared with your previous periodontal records.
If the area has improved, it may return to regular periodontal maintenance. If a deep or inflamed pocket remains, further cleaning, another local treatment or additional periodontal assessment may be considered.
Are there any risks or side effects?
Possible side effects include temporary gum discomfort, tenderness, swelling, bleeding, sensitivity or an unusual taste. Although uncommon, allergic reactions to chlorhexidine can occur.
You should inform your clinician if you have previously experienced an allergy or reaction to chlorhexidine, including reactions to mouthwash, dental products, skin cleansers or medical antiseptics.
Is PerioChip suitable for everyone?
PerioChip may not be suitable for anyone with a known allergy to chlorhexidine or any of the ingredients contained within the insert. Your dental and medical history will be reviewed before treatment is recommended.
It is also not intended as a stand-alone cure for gum disease. Effective home cleaning, professional root surface treatment and ongoing periodontal maintenance remain the foundation of successful care.
Is PerioChip routinely used for gum disease?
No. PerioChip is generally reserved for carefully selected periodontal sites rather than used across the whole mouth as a routine treatment.
Current periodontal guidance does not recommend local antimicrobial products routinely because the additional benefit can be limited. Treatment should therefore be based on the condition of the individual pocket and the response to previous professional cleaning.
