Glycolic Peel
A glycolic peel is a professional skin treatment designed to gently exfoliate the surface of the skin. It can help reveal a fresher, smoother and more even-looking complexion without the need for an invasive procedure.
Glycolic acid belongs to a group of ingredients called alpha hydroxy acids, commonly known as AHAs. During treatment, it helps loosen and remove built-up dead skin cells, encouraging the healthier-looking skin underneath to come through.
What can a glycolic peel help with?
- Dull or tired-looking skin
- Uneven skin tone and texture
- Fine lines and early signs of ageing
- Congested skin and blocked pores
- Superficial pigmentation and dark marks
- Mild acne and the appearance of some post-acne marks
What happens during treatment?
Your appointment begins with a consultation and assessment of your skin. This allows the treatment to be adapted to your skin type, concerns and previous experience with exfoliating products.
The skin is carefully cleansed before the glycolic solution is applied for a controlled amount of time. You may feel mild warmth, tingling or tightness while the peel is working. The solution is then neutralised or removed, and soothing products are applied.
Will my skin peel afterwards?
Despite the name, a glycolic peel does not always cause visible peeling. Some people experience light flaking, dryness or redness, while others notice very little change to the surface of the skin.
The amount of peeling depends on the strength of the treatment, your skin type and how your skin responds. Visible peeling is not required for the treatment to have an effect.
When will I see the results?
Your skin may look fresher and feel smoother after a single treatment. However, concerns such as uneven pigmentation, congestion or fine lines may benefit from a planned course of treatments.
Results develop gradually, and the number of treatments recommended will depend on your skin and the outcome you would like to achieve.
Is a glycolic peel safe?
Glycolic peels are generally well tolerated when the correct strength is selected and the treatment is carried out by a trained professional. A consultation is important because chemical peels are not suitable for every skin type or condition.
Temporary redness, dryness, sensitivity, tightness or light flaking can occur. Less common risks can include prolonged irritation, changes in skin pigmentation, infection or scarring, particularly if the skin is picked or aftercare advice is not followed.
How should I care for my skin afterwards?
- Use gentle skincare products while the skin settles
- Keep the skin moisturised and avoid picking or peeling it
- Avoid scrubs, retinoids and strong exfoliating products until advised
- Avoid excessive heat, saunas and strenuous exercise immediately afterwards
- Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen every day and limit direct sun exposure
Reveal a fresher-looking complexion
A glycolic peel is designed to refresh the skin rather than dramatically change it. With the correct treatment plan and aftercare, it can help your complexion appear smoother, brighter and more balanced.
